Social housing scheme designed by Hughes Architects shortlisted for UK property award

We are very pleased to see an important social housing project in Newtown, Powys that we designed and secured planning permission for has been shortlisted for a national UK award.

The first phase of the redevelopment of the former Territorial Army and Magistrates Court buildings in Back Lane, Newtown has been completed with residents from Mid Wales Housing Association already occupying it.

The overall development is creating 13 flats, with the first phase comprising six one bedroom and two bedroom flats.

It has been shortlisted in the Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year in the 24Housing Awards.

The development is now owned by Mid Wales Housing Association.

Doug Hughes, founder and Managing Director of Hughes Architects, said: “The Back Lane development is a key part of bringing housing opportunities back into Newtown’s town centre and we’re pleased to have designed the scheme which has led to the award shortlisting, in addition to securing its planning permission.

“We have also been working on a neighbouring site with a private developer on land formerly part of the town’s bowling club. This private development will also bring forward much needed housing opportunities in the town centre, creating renewed vibrance in this part of the town which is also a conservation area.”

The development is one of many medium and large scale private and social housing schemes that Hughes Architects has designed and brought through planning.

The practice, which has offices in Newtown, Welshpool and Aberystwyth, works with private developers, landowners, housing associations and others to create good quality housing developments.

The team of specialists at the architects practice means it can create and develop schemes from one off single properties and commercial buildings, through to large scale housing developments.

Sian Howells, Director of New Business of Mid-Wales Housing said: “We are pleased to have the opportunity to work in partnership with a local developer to bring these historic buildings back into beneficial use and help to regenerate this area of the town centre.

“To be shortlisted for this prestigious award is an added bonus and we shall look forward to the awards ceremony in October at which the winner will be announced.”
