HistoryDoug Hughes was trained at the University of Portsmouth and RMIT University Melbourne. Gaining an education on both sides of the globe allowed for great experiment in architecture from the New World to the Old which is exemplified in designs which are traditional yet fresh and challenging. He studied under the RIBA Gold Medal Winner Sir Colin Stansfield Smith (who awarded him a Commendation in Thesis) and influential contemporary architect John Pardey. Graduating in 1995 he joined PRP Architects in Surrey rising to become their youngest Project Architect in 1997 commanding a £15million housing development in Islington. Leaving PRP in 1998 he joined Marcus Beale Architects as Associate and worked on one off high design projects for luminaries such as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. In direct contrast to this he was also partner in charge of schemes for the refurbishment of South Mitcham Community Centre, Merton Park Station and Christ Church Southwark. He returned to mid Wales in 1999 to become Senior Architect with a local firm. During his time with the practice he was Project Architect for all jobs for Coleg Powys on the Newtown and Llandrindod campuses and job leader for 2 environmentally accredited industrial units for the Welsh Development Agency at the Dyfi Eco Parc. Doug Hughes founded DHA in 2001 to build on the experience gained with architectural practices of diverse nature and widely varying projects to deliver an architectural service of local responsiveness with global ambition.
