The Papworth Trust approached us in the very early stages of their project with ambitions of providing a centre for respite holidays as an extension to their current business model. They wanted to site the project in Mid Wales but hadn’t found a suitable property.
Together with the trust we started the journey sourcing various properties and until we found Kerry Farm, a site of approximately 14 acres centred round a large Grade II Listed property with a range of former stables, some of which had already been converted into residential lets.
The first phase of the project resulted in the conversion and alteration of the former stable block to create 4no. Holiday lets, each was designed to be fully accessible for their clientele. This involved a very close working relationship with the Conservation Officer to achieve a sympathetic conversion utilising the best in natural building technologies to achieve a good environmental performance for the buildings along with compliance for the less able users of the project.
These conversions created a sympathetically landscaped courtyard of buildings, improving the setting of the listed buildings.
In addition to the primary conversions in this scheme, minor works were undertaking to the listed farm house to improve its accessibility along with the introduction of 4 yurts and a polytunnel where visitors can learn about food production.
Together with the architectural works on site there were also significant levels of work to improve the general infrastructure and services on site.
Hughes Architects managed the project from start to finish including partaking in community events throughout the project and liaising with Lottery Funding Coordinators before and during construction.
