Legal costs business expansion creates investment and employment in Powys village with help from Hughes Architects

A Manchester legal costs business is to create investment and employment in a Powys village by relocating its headquarters into a former public house.

The decision by Auxilium Legal to locate its HQ in Abermule, Powys, has seen it acquire the former Waterloo Arms. It will renovate and convert it into offices as well as residential accommodation, creating three new jobs and investing a six figure sum into its refurbishment.

Auxilium has worked with architectural and property design practice Hughes Architects, based in Newtown and Welshpool, which has designed plans to refurbish the former Waterloo Arms which closed late last year. Work on the refurbishment will begin in the coming weeks.

“We’ve been working with more and more clients in Wales and Shropshire and as directors we decided to relocate our HQ from Manchester to Mid Wales to better serve our client base,” said Susanna Whawell, Operations Director of Auxilium.

“The former Waterloo Arms, which closed last year, is an ideal location and we will be investing a six-figure sum into the building which is in need of immediate repairs to secure external areas.”

“We’re pleased to be bringing the former pub back into commercial use as our HQ, serving our existing Manchester and London offices. It will also form a home on the upper floors for us.”

The company, established in 2011, provides advice to solicitors, counsel, businesses and private individuals on legal costs associated with a range of court and legal issues.

Richard Lewis of Hughes Architects, which provides design and planning services said the investment by Auxilium Legal would ensure a key building in Abermule was secured, retained and substantially improved.

He said: “Auxilium is investing a significant investment into the refurbishment and renovation of the former Waterloo Arms. We have worked with them to renovate the interior for commercial offices on the ground level as well as residential use on the upper floors.”

Richard added: “There is also a critical need to repair and secure the chimney and other exterior elements of the building. It is good to see such a business placing investment in what is a well known building in Abermule, ensuring it is maintained as a working property as well as a home for the company’s directors.”

Work on the property is due to be completed in September.
