Prospects are a charity that provides homes for people with learning disabilities, unable to live with their families. They have homes across the UK providing residential, domiciliary care, supported living and day opportunities services. Plas Lluest in Aberystwyth was their first development within a large mansion house, but extra accommodation was needed so in 2009 Prospects asked Hughes Architects to assess their property and offer solutions.
We explored options to remodel the mansion and also extend it, but the most cost effective solution was the creation of 2 new houses within the grounds of the house. It was key that while the new buildings must meet all the practical requirements of care provision it must also feel like home. The first house was completed in 2010 and contains 4 bedrooms, staff accommodation, spacious communal areas and bathrooms fitted with specialist access equipment. A palette of rich, warm materials was employed internally and externally to create a welcoming environment.
