Residential, commercial and agricultural building design and planning services – a one-stop shop
Hughes Architects was founded in 2001 by Doug Hughes, our principal architect and managing director.
His objective was to provide a first-class architectural design and planning service, based in Mid Wales. The business soon expanded with architecture, building design and planning commissions throughout Wales and England.

From our four offices at Newtown and Welshpool in Powys and Aberystwyth in Ceredigion, we work with clients throughout Wales, the border areas of Shropshire and Herefordshire, the West Midlands, M4 corridor and further afield, including London and Bristol.
Our clients are always our primary concern. Whether it’s the house owner extending their family home for the first time, to those that build houses again and again, we work with all of them. As experienced planning consultants, we work with landowners and property developers looking to bring forward land.
We are also a lead adviser to local authorities, and we work with housing association partners identifying and co-partnering with them in developing often challenging sites.
Residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural
Our work also includes properties and buildings ranging from churches to health surgeries, schools to office developments.
We work on conversions, renovations and listed buildings, as well as designing industrial and commercial units for expanding businesses.
Architects, planning consultants, interior design
But we don’t stop at being architects. We are also planning consultants.
We talk to the local council planners, local community and parish councils, communities and government agencies in the early stages of your project. In doing so, we can often overcome any of the usual concerns that can often delay projects. We get results. Our excellent success rate with the planning system is a testimony to that.
SuDS Drainage Design Service
We are specialists in the provision of SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) Surveying and Management Services.
Most planning applications now require supporting SuDS reports and strategies. These evaluate options for drainage and provide detailed solutions to ensure adequate systems are in place for discharge into watercourses and sewers.
Our SuDS survey and design service is available as part of our in-house architectural design and planning services. We also provide these services for architects, planning consultants, developers, housing associations, local authorities, and others when required.
RIBA Conservation Architects Register
Doug Hughes is registered with the Royal Institute of British Architects as a Conservation Architect. There are just 176 architects in the UK on the RIBA register for this specialist work in the Conservation Built Environment.
“Conservation Architects find design solutions including the repair, maintenance, adaptation, and re-use of historic buildings and places that sustains and promotes their cultural significance.”
Our architectural team has worked on a wide range of listed building and conservation projects. Talk to us if you have a project involving property in a conservation area or with an older building, including listed structures, so we can provide relevant and professional advice.
