Residents of Powys and, in particular, those living in Llandrindod Wells are being given the chance to win £100 in a competition to find a new name for the current Fairview building which is being transformed to provide secure and fully accessible housing in the form of 12 separate one and two bedroom apartments for vulnerable people.
The large Victorian building, located at the heart of Llandrindod Wells was built in the early 1900’s and was once three separate elegant homes.
The design of the renovations and refurbishment has been undertaken by Hughes Architects, a building design and planning consultancy with offices at Newtown, Welshpool, Aberystwyth and Cardiff.
Thanks to the Welsh Government for Town Centre Loan Finance, and funding through the Regeneration Capital Pipeline Project, SWG Construction (Build and Renovate) Ltd is undertaking the refurbishment of the property on behalf of Powys County Council’s Housing Service.
Councillor Jonathan Wilkinson, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “This accommodation will provide safe and secure homes for people who want to live independent and healthy lives within their community, but need a little bit more support to do so.
"We’d like to find a fitting name for this new housing development and invite residents in the area to put forward their suggestions, ideally something that reflects its future purpose within the community.”
The properties have been designed by Hughes Architects Ltd, a Mid Wales based building design and planning consultancy, together with SWG Construction (B&R) Ltd to provide fully accessible and secure accommodation, which is due to open this summer. SWG Construction (B&R) Ltd is kindly donating cash prizes of £100 for the winning name and 3 runners up prizes of £50 each.

We needed to ensure the design was sympathetic not only to the building itself, but the surrounding area, as well as practical for the residents who will be living there.”

"We would like to encourage all local residents to suggest fitting names for the building as it moves into the next stage of its life supporting local individuals and families. Competition entries should be entitled ‘Fairview Competition’ and can be either emailed to whqs@powys.gov.uk, handed in to staff at the reception desk in the Gwalia or posted to Housing Services, The Gwalia, Ithon Road, Llandrindod Wells, Powys LD1 6AA.
Entries should include a suggested name, reasons for the suggestion, the person’s name, address and contact number and be submitted by 30 April 2018.
All employees involved in the project and their immediate family are excluded from entering the competition. Winners will be notified within a month of the competition closing and invited to attend the official opening.
